Modelling

This is what it looks like when I create a level in Maya.

This simple model has graphics meshes and physical geometries. This level took me two hours so far to create, and my guess would be that the graphics take 2/3 of the time including layout tinkering. I'm not sure how to optimize this, and I don't know if a level editor would improve things. It might be that I'm just slow, and for that no tools in the world can help.

You can probably make out the road around the taller of the buildings. That road and the bridge took took me 40 minutes, maybe more, to layout and texturize. That I could use a tool for. And a terrain editor is a must have later on. The terrain I produce by hand now has a very tiled look with extremely unnatural undulations. Oh well, mustn't grumble.
